近年來，北京當局對文化審查不斷收緊。近日，日本神戶大學漢學學者揭露，有中國出版社編輯要求在中國發表作品的日本作者必須認同中共和「一個中國」。
一位號為「蓉堂居士」的日本漢學者16日在推特發文，指中國某著名出版公司傳來一則令人驚訝的訊息，並附上截圖，這家中國出版商表示，「作者是否認同中國共產黨對新中國的領導，以及認同一個中國，或者說不反對上述問題。請作者微信答覆，截圖給我即可。」
「蓉堂居士」說，涉及的作品是一首日本人寫的「中國詩」，詩中寄情山水，並沒有涉及對中共的批評、也未涉及新疆、台灣等敏感議題。
推文另透露已拒絕了中國出版社方面的政治要求，並認為中國出版商要求外國作家簽署「政治保證書」的做法目前僅處於「內部操作」階段，但坦言感到中國媒體言論界正在形成一種不良氣氛，且僅僅因為本身是日本人，約5年前就開始被一些中國出版社拒絕刊發作品。
據「自由亞洲電台」18日的報導，現代中國研究學者、日本東京大學教授阿古智子（Tomoko Ako）表示，身邊的學者朋友也有類似遭遇。她認為中國在極權政治下，正在走向封閉和文化荒漠化。
旅居日本的資深媒體人、作家賈葭受訪表示，中國對海外文化、出版物的審查已從審查內容到對作者進行思想審查，這意味著審查進一步升級。
賈葭說，像這樣的情況出現絲毫不意外，對出版業的審查越來越嚴，過去只是審作品的內容，如今要審作者的思想，相比過去只審內容又嚴了一步，開始針對人而不是只是針對這本書。
報導指出，中國當局對海外出版物的政治審查愈加嚴厲。很多海外作家主動或被動選擇向中國審查制度低頭。美國哈佛已故教授傅高義（Ezra Vogel）在中國出版「鄧小平傳記」時，刪減了「八九學運」期間的一些細節。
去年9月，英文政治寓言小說「1984」原版書籍在中國銷售時，書中部分內容遭塗抹或撕頁。該事件被稱為「1984」中國現實版。
