新西蘭總理阿德恩周四（19日）突然宣布請辭，她的任期最遲於2月7日結束。她宣布下一次選舉將於10月14日舉行，在此之前，她將繼續擔任議員。她所屬的工黨將於下周日（22日）舉行黨團投票，選出新任黨魁，當選者會成為下任總理。
據法廣報導，阿德恩工黨會議上表示，她已在儘可能長的時間內，傾盡全力付出。她說：”我只是沒有精力再干四年了」。
42歲的阿德恩於2017年10月26日就任總理，是新西蘭史上第3位女總理，也是當地自1850年代以來的最年輕領袖，她於2020年大選再次帶領工黨取得大勝，成功連任總理。
最近的民意調查顯示，在下次選舉中，中右翼聯盟將比工黨更具優勢。但阿德恩女士保證說，這並不是她離開的原因。
她說：”我離開不是因為我相信我們不能贏得下一次選舉，而是因為我相信我們能夠，而且將會贏得這個選舉」。
法新社報導稱，新西蘭副總理格蘭特-羅伯遜立即明確表示無意角逐黨魁之位。
而即將離任的總理阿德恩保證，她的辭職的背後沒有任何秘密原因。她說：「我之所以離開，是因為這樣的特權地位伴隨着巨大的責任」。自己「有責任知道什麼時候你是合適的領導人，也知道什麼時候你不是」。
