根據維州政府的一項新計畫，該州女性未來可在藥房直接購買避孕藥，不需要醫生處方。此舉引發部分醫生擔憂，認為可能會讓患者面臨健康風險。

州長艾倫（Jacinta Allan）與衛生廳長托馬斯（Mary-Anne Thomas）3月6日宣布擴大維州「藥房即時照護計畫」（Chemist Care Now）。該計畫允許民眾在當地藥房接受治療，而不必先去看全科醫生（GP），適用的疾病包括帶狀皰疹與尿道感染。

在目前制度下，女性可以在參與計畫的藥房補領避孕藥處方，但第一次仍必須先由全科醫生診療。

新政策意味著，從7月開始，已加入該計畫的850家藥房可以直接向女性提供口服避孕藥而無需醫生處方。

這一決定使州政府與澳洲的藥品監管機構治療用品管理局（Therapeutic Goods Administration，TGA）立場出現分歧。該機構一直認為，避孕藥應該只由醫生開立處方，因為醫生能夠管理可能出現的嚴重併發症風險。

治療用品管理局指出：「口服避孕藥的使用可能產生顯著的不良反應，這些情況並不符合非處方葯的標準。」

報告指，副作用包括體重增加、情緒焦慮、大量出血以及血栓栓塞，而且隨著年齡增長，風險可能增加。

在首次領取藥物前，女性仍需進行一次免費諮詢。藥劑師將在諮詢中說明相關風險，並提供其他避孕選項的建議。
